John C. PerryLast November Burd Street Press in Pennsylvania published Perry’s book on slavery in America. The book is entitled Myths & Realities of American Slavery, The True History of Slavery in America. The book has received critical acclaim and went out of print in June 2003. The book is in the process of going into its second printing in a softbound edition. He recently appeared on national television with a talk about his book on C-Span’s Book TV. For more book information see www.mythsandrealities.com. Perry has been a member of the Texas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) for twenty years. After being a member of the Camp in Hillsboro, Texas in 1988, he led the re-founding of Camp #1250 in Temple, Texas and served as the Camp’s first Commander. For 16 years Perry has served as the newsletter editor for his camp. The Confederate Gazette, has won past best newsletter awards at both the state and national levels of the SCV, including the Best Newsletter award at the Texas Division convention in 2003. For the last five years served as the editor of the Texas Division’s newsletter, The Texas Dispatch. In 1990, Perry became the very first Central Texas Brigade Commander. He served in that capacity for four years. During that time, four new SCV camps were formed. He served as a Texas Division officer beginning in 1994 and was elected Texas Division Commander in 1998. During his term as Division Commander, the Division had its first Legislative Day in Austin. As a result of that effort, the Texas Division walked away with the coveted Senate Resolution #526 proclaiming April as Confederate History Month in Texas. On the SCV national level, Perry in 1996 was appointed as the SCV’s Chief of Heritage Defense. While he served in that role the SCV won several important heritage defense fights. Also during his term the very first Heritage Defense campaign was begun, raising nearly $100,000 for the SCV, before he left office. He was honored at the SCV’s 1997 National Convention in Nashville with the coveted Robert E. Lee Gold Award, the 2nd highest award given by the SCV. He has received numerous Texas SCV Division honors. In 1998, the Texas Division of the SCV honored him by presenting Perry with the Division’s Confederate of the Year Award. In 2000 Perry was presented with the coveted Deo Vindice Award, the highest award given by the Texas Division, in honor of his service to the SCV. He was elected the Army Commander of the Trans-Mississippi Department at the 2002 SCV Reunion in Memphis, Tennessee and serves the SCV as a member of its General Executive Council. Perry lives in Salado, Texas, is married to wife Sandra. They have three grown daughters and five grandchildren. Perry owns a marketing and media consulting company in Central Texas.
